SCOTLAND has been under occupation by England for a long time. Recent events have made it much more apparent to Scots…

Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

I don’t mean to talk on behalf of Welsh, Scots or the Irish, but, generally speaking, they all harbour bad feelings for England, especially considering their not so glorious history with the kingdom of England. The English media is not particularly friendly with its Celtic neighbours. English Cymrophobia is another word for discrimination against the Welsh in England and many of you may be already familiar with the unflattering feelings Welsh, Irish and Scots have in England.

The independence referendum campaign of 2014 might not have succeeded in leading Scotland to independence, but it did succeed in normalising the idea of independence and making it the most important issue in Scottish politics. This coronavirus outbreak is a human crisis, but it also has political ramifications. During the crisis, of course our focus needs to be on ensuring that people are safe and well, that medical staff have the protection and resources that they need, that people who are ill receive the care and treatment they depend on, and those who cannot work receive the financial support they require. However those of us who are stuck at home now have plenty of time to think about the kind of country we want to live in once this epidemic has run its course. We have plenty of time to make note of the selfish and entitled behaviour of those…

Scotland Coronavirus Tracker Links

March 26th at a Glance

Today brought 175 new infections, which is a large jump from yesterdays 135 new infections, and the most in a single day so far.

In total, there are now 894 confirmed infections in Scotland. The total number of infections has risen by 24% from yesterday, and 79% from three days ago.

This means that 0.016% of the population have been infected, although the actual number is likely much, much higher.

Most people will recover from the virus within 2 weeks. So if we assume that only the new cases from the past 2 weeks are ‘active’, then that means there are currently about 834 active cases, 25 deaths, and 35 recoveries.

Boris Johnson’s Cull

Jason Michael's avatarRandom Public Journal

By Jason Michael

BRITAIN’S PRIME MINISTER, Boris Johnson, last night put the people of the United Kingdom on lockdown, introducing a sweeping set of measures and restrictions on the population designed to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus. These measures, unprecedented outside of wartime, are to be welcomed and are entirely urgent and necessary, but it simply cannot go unsaid that these steps have come late – and perhaps too late to avoid a catastrophic loss of life across Britain and the north of Ireland. Yet, in his address Mr Johnson was at pains to convey that this lockdown is consistent with the approach ‘the UK has been taking.’ This is not true. This is not the approach the British government has been taking, in spite of early warnings from the Chinese government, the actions of other European states, and the sharp criticism of the World Health Organization.

Legislation is set to be rushed through the Commons on Monday

A CROSS-PARTY group of MPs, including the SNP’s Joanna Cherry, is set to try and limit the length of time the Government have to use new emergency coronavirus laws.

Legislation, which is set to be rushed through the Commons on Monday, will aim to hand over unprecedented levels of powers to ministers for the next two years.

It will allow police to legally order those with the disease not to attend work and stay in isolation. They can be forbidden from travelling and will face a £1000 fine if they don’t comply. Detaining people under the mental health act will only need one doctor’s permission, not two. And they would be able to hold a patient for 28 days.

The 329-page legislation also cuts some of the red tape on a number of existing regulations.

The bill will make it easier to expand morgues and speed up the process for organising funerals – current Government modelling suggests around 50% of deaths will occur in a three-week period.

The legislation also gives the Border Force the power to temporarily suspend operations at airports and other transport hubs Immigration officers will also be given more powers to detain people of all nationalities and direct them to screening and quarantine.

Anyone found to have the virus can be held in quarantine for 14 days.

That two-week period can then be extended by two further periods of up to 14 days if doctors still have concerns.

Both police and public health workers are entitled to enforce quarantine restrictions.

The emergency legislation is expected to be fast-tracked through all stages of the Commons on Monday, and then pass through the Lords on Wednesday and Thursday.

It’s believed there won’t be a vote called, but rather the bill will be nodded through.

However, the amendment from the cross-party group could be put to a vote.

They want to see the powers in the bill expire after six months and only be renewed further with the approval of Parliament.

Cherry tweeted: “If @BorisJohnson thinks we can ‘send the #coronavirus virus packing’ in 12 weeks how can he justify taking such extraordinary sweeping #EmergencyPowers for 2 years?

“I am genuinely puzzled & will be co-sponsoring a probing amendment on this issue.”

As well as Cherry, the amendment is supported by Labour’s Harriet Harman, and Conservative MP David Davis.

Harman told Sky News the “exceptional” powers were necessary, “but two years is too long”.

“No-one wants to stop them getting the powers they need to keep us all safe, but we need them to last no longer than is necessary.”

The sigh of relief

Alex Salmond is going home a free man. He has been found not guilty on all charges except one which was found not proven, and another charge which was dropped by the prosecution earlier in the trial. Our faith in Scottish justice shines today and BBC Scotland’s Sarah Smith has gone into self-isolation. Was it just me or did she seem to be barely containing her displeasure as she reported the verdict?

The British nationalists were rubbing their hands in glee at the prospect of Alex Salmond being handcuffed and sent to prison. All over the country, newspaper editors are having to bin their gleefully malicious headlines, and the British nationalist frothers on social media are having a collective meltdown. This wasn’t supposed to happen. This was supposed to be all their SNPbad Schadenfreude union flag Christmasses come at once, and it’s all been snatched away by the common sense…

Hors de Combat

sir-winston-churchill-396973_640

It is common knowledge that the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is a great admirer of Winston Churchill. He has written a biography of the wartime leader, and it is reputed that his relentless drive to become leader of the Conservative Party, and thus PM, has grown out of a desire to emulate the great man.

Watching his daily press briefings during the current health crisis, I cannot help wondering whether, somewhere in his secret heart, Boris is relishing having a situation to manage which has been described as ‘the most serious since World War II.’

These thoughts were further stimulated by hearing his choice of metaphor in a recent broadcast: according to our national leader at Westminster, we are ‘at war’ with the virus.

“The conditional programs inherently use poverty as a threat. That’s Cruel. Shouldn’t we be ashamed of ourselves?” ― Karl Widerquist

The mounting crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is forcing countries to adopt unprecedented measures to combat it. In addition to the public health measures such as physical distancing (not social distancing. At times like this we need MORE social solidarity) we’re also seeing unprecidented measures being deployed to salvage an economy that has practically ground to a halt. Unlike any economic recession since possibly the 1930s we’re seeing a combined demand and supply shock. The virus makes it hard to make and sell things and everyone is at home in quarantine so no-one is buying the things anyway.

This isn’t true of all sectors of course and a great deal of effort is being expended to keep essential services like food deliveries running. In addition to my friends…
